Nereids in an underwater dance film.
In Greek mythology, Nereids are female spirits of the ocean, associated with the Mediterranean sea. Goddesses of the sea’s rich bounty and protectors of sailors and fishermen, coming to the aid of those in distress. Individually they represented various facets of the sea from the salty brine, to the sea foam, sand, rocks, waves and currents.
This video installation reflects the mythologizing of females in European mythology, but also our deep relationship to water. Water and liquidity are essential to human survival and fertility, this work aims to highlight the interconnectedness of water, women (the female) and life.
"Water extends embodiment in time –body, to body, to body. Water in this sense is facilitative and directed towards the becoming of other bodies. Our own embodiment, as already noted, is never really autonomous. Nor is it autochthonous, nor autopoietic: we require other bodies of other waters (that in turn require other bodies and other waters) to bathe us into being" (Neimanis, 2016:3).
